Learners construct their own meaning. A learner’s history, prior experience, and need for the information effects what a learner constructs as new knowledge. Learning is an active process. Learners must be involved in the process of learning, not passive recipients of information. Learning takes place in a broad context. Learners bring their lives and experiences to the process. They need to know why this information is important and be able to place it within a context of their own experience. Learners must have personal autonomy. This involves having some control over what is to be learned, how it is to be learned, and how the learner can demonstrate that learning has occurred. Individuals learn differently. All individuals learn at a different rate, in different ways, and have an optimum intelligence within a spectrum of multiple intelligences. Learning is holistic contributing to the cognitive, emotional, physical and spiritual growth of the learner. Learning is social. Learning is constructed through the interaction of individuals with others and the tools and symbols of society. What is learned is situated within a cultural and historical context. |
